"Healing Community through True Storytelling and Collage Portraiture"
Greetings Friends and Colleagues! The UCLA Beloved Community Initiative (BCI) invites you to join us on Friday, April 21, from 10am-2pm (lunch is provided), in the UCLA James West Alumni Center for an art-based, team-centered workshop to tell a shared plase-based story about UCLA. Co-facilitated by UCLA alumnus, Dr. Oscar Edwards, '78, MBA '81, renowned Bay Area documentary filmmaker Doug Harris, and Dr. Paula Gerstenblatt, Professor of Social Work at the University of Southern Maine and professional artist, we will work in teams of 6 comprised of students, staff, faculty, alumni, prospective students, and community members using the method of collage portraiture to represent a layered and complex narrative of place from a variety of perspectives utilizing archival documents, photographs, hand drawn images, and text. The purpose of this workshop is to learn about and construct a cohesive narrative about UCLA and the origins of True Storytelling working across academic disciplines and roles using the arts-based method of collage portraiture. Arts-based methods help heal relationships and build community through gaining deeper understanding, discovering shared concerns, and imagining new ways to teach, work in the community, and do research--all while making new friends and having a great time together.
